What is Eastern Spadefoot

The eastern spadefoot (Pelobates syriacus) is biologically confirmed. It is parapatric with its closest relative, P. fuscus, without signs of hybridization. Tarkhnishvili et al. 2026: found in eastern Georgia. Spadefoots from the Balkans traditionally attributed to P. syriacus may belong to P. balcanicus; COI differences between Georgia and the Balkans exceed 10%. Subspecies concept P. s. boettgeri (Dufresnes et al. 2019); Georgian populations are tentatively assigned by regional affiliation. The barcode is from Chachuna. The checklist figure is Tbilisi.
