Who we are

What the atlas covers

“An empty field beats an invented one.”

Reptiles.ge is an atlas of the animals of Georgia, the country in the South Caucasus. Herpetofauna is the deep layer, following Tarkhnishvili et al. 2026. Birds, mammals, spiders, scorpions, and insects are covered more thinly in the same catalog. The site is published in four languages; Georgian is the canonical text.

We do not invent administrative regions, measurements, IUCN category, or national Red List status. Candidate taxa stay candidates.

The atlas is an editorial compilation. Photos always carry a credit; Georgia-field verification is marked only with evidence.

The atlas is prepared by the Reptiles.ge editorial team. The site is owned and run by Nika Shamiladze.

Bite and venom pages are educational: call 112; they are not medical protocol.

How we work

Standards & sources

Profiles compile taxonomy and what published sources already support for Georgia. Missing size, range, or status stays hidden rather than filled with plausible prose.

Administrative regions, measurements, IUCN, and the national Red List appear only when a cited source already used on the site names them. Checklist candidates are not treated as confirmed.

Herpetofauna checklist

Amphibians and reptiles follow the Tarkhnishvili et al. 2026 checklist. For snake distribution we also draw on Iankoshvili & Tarkhnishvili 2021.

Photography

Every photo is credited. We mark a photo as taken in Georgia only when the photographer and the place are known.

Editorial policy

How texts are written, checked and corrected

Texts are written by the Reptiles.ge editorial team from published sources. Some drafts are prepared with the help of AI, and a member of the team checks each one against the sources.

Writing and review

Text changes to a species profile are first saved as a draft, together with their sources. The owner checks the draft against the sources and only then publishes it. Every change to a profile is saved as a separate version, so we always know what changed and when. The Georgian text is written first; the English, Russian and Turkish texts are prepared from it.

Corrections

Spotted a mistake? Write to us: which page, what is wrong and, if you can, a source. We check the report against the source. If it holds, we correct the text in all four languages.

The site carries no advertising. What is written, and how, is decided by the editorial team based on published sources.
